Crowns
A crown is a permanent covering that fits over an original tooth that has been severely damaged by decayed or trauma. Crowns are made of a variety of different materials such as all porcelain, porcelain to gold, porcelain to a non-precious alloy or completely gold or alloy metals. Modern Porcelain Crowns have the most natural appearance and are preferred by many patients. Depending on the strenght and angle of the patient's bite some durablity issues may need to be considered.
The treatment plan for a patient receiving a crown involves:
- Numbing the tooth to remove the decay in or around it.
- Re-sculpturing the tooth to provide an ideal fit for the crown.
- Making an impression or mold of your teeth in order to create a custom-made crown.
- Making a temporary crown out of acrylic resin and fitting it onto the tooth during the interim period when the permanent custom-made crown is being created.
- Your impression and models are then sent to a modern dental laboratory for fabrication-which takes approximately 2 and a half weeks.
- When the permanent crown returns, it is tried on the prepared tooth after removing the temporary crown.
- Adjustments are made if necessary for the proper bite and shape.
- After ensuring the crown has the proper look and fit, the dentist cements it into place with a permanent cement.
This entire process generally consists of a minimum of 2-3 visits over a three to four week period.
Once the procedure is completed, proper dental hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing, is required to maintain healthy gums and crowns.

Root Canal
A root canal is a procedure that extracts decayed pulp from the central part of the tooth, reshapes the canal and replaces it with strengthening filler.
Cavites are the result of decay of the enamel of the tooth and when left long enough, this decay can burrow deeply inside the hard structures. When the damage goes beyond what can be treated with a filling and affects the nerve, the doctor may recommend a proceedure called a "root canal" (or endodontics). This proceedure may preserve the tooth and retaining its original integrity, thereby saving a tooth that in the past would have to have had to be pulled.
The Procedure:
- The patient undergoes anesthesia to numb the tooth.
- A rubber dental dam may be used to isolate the tooth.
- The tooth is accessed by a small opening to allow for removal of the infected or dead dental pulp.
- The tooth is comprehensively cleaned and the canals are reshaped with special endodontic instruments.
- The tooth canals are filled with a special biocompatible filling material.
- A temporary covering or crown is used to cover the access opening.
- After healing, a permanent restoration or porcelain crown may be recommended to protect the tooth.
