At the practice of Tom B. Styles, DDS, it’s our mission to make our patients as comfortable as possible when visiting their dentist in San Antonio. We understand that many patients – both children and adult – can be completely scared of the dentist. If this describes you, you’re not alone! However, if you decide to cope with this fear by avoiding the dentist, you’re only going to cause your dental condition to deteriorate. Dentists provide many helpful services, which is why it’s so important to see them twice every year. To help get you more willing and able to make these visits, we’ve given you a few tips on overcoming dental fear and dental phobia.

Take Care of Your Teeth

The best tip that we can possibly give a fearful patient is to just simply take better care of his or her teeth. Many patients are nervous about going to the dentist because they don’t want to hear that their teeth are in terrible condition and that they’ll need to undergo more extensive dental treatments. By taking better care of your teeth, you won’t be as worried since you’ll know that your teeth are healthier and there’s less that can go wrong with them. We recommend brushing properly multiple times per day, flossing daily, and eating less sugary and acidic foods. This will put you on the right path toward healthy teeth and likely make you less scared of going to the dentist.

You’ve probably heard a quote along the lines of “People fear what they don’t understand.” This couldn’t be any truer for those who are scared of the dentist. Many routine and pain-free dental treatments are viewed like they’re some medieval torture instead of the helpful procedures that they truly are. For example (and since we’re just throwing out quotes!), you’ve probably heard of the saying, “I’d rather get a root canal than…,” signifying that a root canal is some horrific procedure. In actuality, a root canal isn’t really anything more than a big filling where a patient will be under anesthesia and free of pain. If you have dental phobia, please take the time to look around the website of your dentist in San Antonio and learn what a first visit is like and how stress-free it really is.

Be Open About Your Dental Phobia

Also, being open about your nervousness is a great way to overcoming dental fear. We at the practice of Tom B. Styles, DDS want nothing more than for you to be able to receive the compassionate dental care that you need to keep a healthy smile. This can only start by getting you into our office though. If you have any hesitations or nervousness, please don’t hesitate to talk to a member of our staff about it. If you decide to schedule an appointment with us, we’ll even allow you to just meet with Dr. Styles and talk about your anxieties. This will allow your San Antonio dentist to best tend to your needs and help you overcome your dental phobia.
