To make things even easier, we’ve included the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions here at the office of Dr. Tom B. Styles D.D.S., so check them out below and see if you can find the answers you’re looking for!

Q. How often should I see a dentist?

  1. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the recommended frequency for dental visits one at least twice every year. These visits are just regularly scheduled check-ups for examining your oral health along with a professional dental cleaning to clear away any plaque buildup on your smile. If you suffer from other dental issues such as gum disease or tooth decay, you may need to schedule more appointments throughout the year beyond your two regularly scheduled visits.

Q. What do I do if I have a dental emergency?

  1. Contact our office immediately by calling us at 210-344-0101 to speak with a member of our staff who will be able to determine if you have a dental emergency, and guide you through the next steps that you should take. If you are calling outside of our normal business hours, you can get our doctor’s emergency number by calling our office. If for any reason you can’t make it to our office during business hours and need medical assistance, you can also go to your local hospital or emergency room.

Q. What kind of toothbrush should I use?

  1. Use a toothbrush that you feel comfortable with and can easily reach all of your teeth when brushing. We recommend using a brush that has soft to medium bristles to prevent causing damage to your gums if you brush too aggressively. For kids, make sure you get a kid’s-size brush so it’s comfortable for them and soft bristles are the way to go because they’re gentle on their sensitive, developing gums.

Q. How often should I replace my toothbrush?

  1. You should be replacing your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months as recommended by the American Dental Association. Constant use of your brush on a daily basis will wear down those bristles and often leave them bent. When those bristles are out of place, they won’t be able to penetrate between your teeth or clear away bacteria under your gums as effectively, which is why replacing that brush is so important. If you notice that your brushes are wearing and becoming frayed in a shorter amount of time, it may be recommended that you replace your brush sooner.

Q. Is a powered toothbrush more effective than a manual toothbrush?

  1. While powered toothbrushes may claim that they remove more plaque than a normal toothbrush, a manual toothbrush can be just as effective as long as you use proper brushing technique. However, kids often find electric toothbrushes more fun and exciting compared to using a manual brush, so getting your children one may help ensure that they maintain a good oral hygiene regimen.

Q. Should I brush or floss first?

  1. You can go with whatever you prefer with this one! It actually doesn’t matter if you floss or brush first, as long as you use proper technique. What matters when it comes to having a healthy smile is that you get all the food particles, bacteria, and plaque off of your teeth and gums. However, flossing before you brush actually has the advantage of letting the fluoride in your toothpaste penetrate into the hard to reach areas between your teeth that could have been plugged up with food particles before.

Q. Is one type of toothpaste better than the others?

  1. Most toothpastes will have the necessary ingredients to clear away all the bacteria on your smile, but Dr. Styles recommends that you use a toothpaste that has fluoride and has an ADA Seal of Acceptance on it. The seal from the ADA just means that it has been assessed and proven to be safe and effective for oral health care, while fluoride helps restore important vitamins and minerals to your teeth that may have been stripped away due to bacteria and plaque. Fluoride will even help strengthen your enamel to prevent your teeth from tooth decay in the future!

Q. Are payment plans available for my dental treatment?

  1. Here at the dental office of Dr. Tom B. Styles, we believe that cost should never stand between a patient and a healthy smile, so yes, payment plans are available for your dental care. To make sure paying for your care is as simple as possible, we accept most major credit cards as well as many types of dental insurance. Our team will also process your insurance claim for you when your co-payment is received.
